| | | Russia invades Ukraine: Latest updates | | After weeks of tension over the number of troops massed at Ukraine's borders, earlier this morning Russian forces attacked Ukraine from the north, west and south. The scale and speed of the attacks have shocked many in Ukraine. Explosions have been reported across the country, near many major cities. The cost in terms of casualties is not yet clear; thousands have tried to flee cities, with others seeking shelter underground and in subways. Russia's President, Vladmir Putin, claimed that the operations were an act of self-defence; Western leaders have condemned the Kremlin's actions, with many countries announcing further sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia was closing itself off from the "civilised world", and warned that a "new iron curtain" was falling. The effect is already being felt by financial markets, with oil prices soaring. As the situation unfolds, the BBC World Service's Global News Podcast will have reports, reaction, interviews and analysis, while the BBC News website will bring updates from around the world. | | | | | | | | | | | | |
