| | Attacks resume despite Mariupol evacuations - Ukrainian commander | | | | | | | | | | While the weekend brought relief for dozens of civilians who had endured months of Russian bombardment in the besieged city of Mariupol, a Ukrainian officer says attacks have now resumed on the steel works in the southern port. Scores of Ukrainians who had been surviving in bunkers, with minimal food and water, were freed as part of a United Nations and Red Cross "safe passage operation". But Ukrainian National Guard commander Denys Shlega said attacks resumed at the Azovstal steel plant as soon as the civilians who had been evacuated left. Hundreds of civilians remain trapped inside, he said. Meanwhile, Boris Johnson will today become the first Western leader to address the Ukrainian parliament since Russia invaded. He is expected to echo the words of predecessor Winston Churchill - as Ukraine's President Volodomyr Zelensky did with UK MPs in March - by describing Ukraine's resistance as its "finest hour". Over video link to Kyiv, Mr Johnson will pledge £300m in extra military support, which No 10 says will include electronic warfare equipment, a counter-battery radar system, GPS jammers and night-vision devices. Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokeswoman Layla Moran said Ukraine needed the weapons a week ago and questioned whether the prime minister had pulled off a "deeply cynical" move to delay the announcement to the week of local elections. | | | | | |

| | Leak suggests US judges could scrap abortion rights | | | | | | | | The US Supreme Court could overturn the nationwide right to have an abortion, according to a leaked draft opinion that has triggered protests in Washington. According to the Politico website, Justice Samuel Alito writes that the 1973 Roe v Wade decision - giving women an absolute right to an abortion in the first three months of pregnancy, and limited rights in the second trimester - is "egregiously wrong". The justices are expected to rule on the case by early July. If the draft were to become law, it would instantly make abortion illegal in 22 states. In a statement, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer - both Democrats - said: "If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past 50 years." Six of the nine current justices on the court were appointed by Republican presidents. | | | | | |

| | O'Sullivan wins world title to equal record | | | | | | | | There were emotional scenes at the snooker in Sheffield last night, as Ronnie O'Sullivan equalled Stephen Hendry's modern-era record of seven World Championships. With an 18-13 win over Judd Trump, "The Rocket" - aged 46 - also became the oldest player to win at the Crucible Theatre, eclipsing Ray Reardon's achievement when a year younger, in 1978. Asked about matching Hendry's record, O'Sullivan said: "We can share it for a year!" It had taken the Scot just a decade in the 1990s to win seven world titles, whereas O'Sullivan was first crowned in 2001. And Steve Davis - a six-time champion in the 1980s - says O'Sullivan has faced a far stronger field. "The longevity of his career is incredible because it didn't happen for me and it didn't happen for Stephen either." | | | | | |

| | | | | | | | | | Standing on a hillside overlooking the Serbian city of Bor, you would be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to a Chinese province. The workers shout instructions in Mandarin, the flags are red and the admin offices resemble temples. China is pouring money into the copper mine that has defined this place for decades. The extraction of the metal has stained the water of some nearby lakes and reservoirs a rusty hue. It's also a metaphor for how the red of the Chinese Communist Party is leaving its mark across Europe. Outside of the EU, Serbia does not have the same level of workers' rights you would expect to find in Dublin, Madrid or Vienna. | | | | | | | | | | | | Nick Beake | | Europe correspondent | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | | | | | | There's a variety of stories on front pages, with the Sun reporting a fake priest was allowed into an Army barracks by soldiers who protect the Queen - then allowed to stay the night. The Metro puns it was "the fail of the sentry" to allow the man into Victoria Barracks, beside Windsor Castle, without demanding he prove his identity. The Daily Telegraph leads on Prime Minister Boris Johnson becoming the first foreign leader to address the Ukrainian parliament since Russia invaded. Meanwhile, the Guardian says Home Secretary Priti Patel faces mass legal action from Ukrainians whose cases have been stuck for weeks in a "chaotic" visa backlog. Read the full review. | | | | | |

| | Need something different? | | | | | | | | Every spring, for a day or two, water can be seen gushing from the trunk of a 100-year-old mulberry tree in a Montenegran village. It's quite a sight. Find out what causes it. And while we're on the subject of natural wonders, BBC Ideas partners with the Open University to explore the fascinating world of fungi. This film runs through just a few of the millions of different species - from "eco-warriors" and those that help clear oil spills, to insect "employers" and the "evil genius" capable of mind control. | | | | | |
