| | England's Lionesses make history by beating Germany in Euro 2022 final | | | | | | | | | | For the first time in 56 years, England have won a major footballing trophy. The women’s team were victorious in the Euro 2022 final after clinching a second goal in extra time, beating long-standing rivals Germany. The Lionesses - who have made history by winning their first major women's tournament - went ahead in the second half when Ella Toone came off the bench to score. But 17 minutes later, eight-time champions Germany equalised, forcing the game into extra time. In front of a record crowd at Wembley, both teams tried to break the 1-1 deadlock, and it was England substitute Chloe Kelly who managed to get the ball into the back of the net. The crowd erupted, and the players celebrated - as did their boss Sarina Wiegman, who is the first manager in history to win back-to-back Euros with two different nations. "This is what dreams are made of," said Kelly, as Wiegman added it was "time to party", after England ended Germany's winning streak - until this match they had never lost in the final of a major tournament. Congratulations have been flooding in for England, with the Queen leading the pack. She told them their "success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned". There were scenes of jubilation on and off the pitch, with fans chanting "it's coming home". And to top it off, England forward Beth Mead picked up the Golden Boot as the European Women's Championship's top scorer. It was a final like no other, says our sports journalist Emma Sanders, and it had the perfect ending. England lifted the trophy to a standing ovation. | | | | | |

| | Last-minute hearing due in Archie Battersbee case | | | | | | | | Twelve-year-old Archie Battersbee was found unconscious at home in Southend, Essex in April. His mum Hollie Dance believes he might have been taking part in an online challenge. He is on life support in hospital and has never regained consciousness. Archie’s family have been urging the Royal London Hospital to continue his treatment. They launched legal proceedings but two High Court judges have agreed with doctors, who have said Archie is brain-stem dead, and ruled life support treatment could end. The Court of Appeal also said that doctors could lawfully disconnect his ventilator. But his family are continuing to fight and have applied to the United Nations (UN) to consider his case. While this is being reviewed, the Court of Appeal will be holding a last-minute hearing following a request from the UN to keep treating Archie. The hearing is at scheduled for 11:00 BST - three hours before his care is due to end. | | | | | |

| | | | | | | | | | In the village of Vybuty, a large crowd has gathered outside a church. People are queuing up to kiss the icon of a saint. An Orthodox priest in a gold embroidered vestment chants a prayer for Russia: "For our blessed country, its rulers and its army." In the congregation are Russian servicemen. They cross themselves with three fingers according to the Orthodox tradition. Ukraine isn't mentioned in the mass. But it's on people's minds. "In our family, we have a lot of young men who are serving there," one of the worshippers, Ludmila, tells me. "God won't abandon them. They will definitely return home." Many Russian soldiers haven't. | | | | | | | | | | | | Steve Rosenberg | | Russia Editor, Pskov | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | Need something different? | | | | | | | | If you saw a picture of a dense spiral swirl of stars, you'd probably recognise it as the Milky Way, our galaxy. It's made up of billions of stars and grew when smaller galaxies merged over billions of years. There's still more to learn - and to help with that a powerful telescope has been supercharged to take a look at the stars. Here's what scientists hope to discover. When you look at the sky on a clear night, there's a good chance you'll see stars. There's also a chance you could spot the International Space Station, which you might be surprised to know is using laser beams to help save the world’s forests. It sounds like science fiction but it's happening. Here's more on the story. And finally, on the subject of saving things, what has happened to the various artworks by Banksy that appeared in parts of Norfolk and Suffolk last year? We've investigated, and have some before and after pictures. Take a look. | | | | | |
